Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story officially comes out on Netflix today (4 May), so everyone asking, “when is Queen Charlotte coming out?” can officially be consoled.
The prequel spin-off to the popular Shonda Rhimes series Bridgerton centres on Queen Charlotte's rise to prominence and her love story with King George, with the nearly minute-long trailer that came out back in March inviting viewers to watch the “the story that started it all".
In the trailer, we meet a young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) who is filmed wondering why she was chosen to ascend to the throne. We are also treated to a sneak peek of the arranged marriage between the Queen and King George (Corey Mylchreest).
But first, let's have a scroll through all the stills from the newly-dropped series. One image sees Queen Charlotte looking fabulous as ever while sitting on a green satin sofa, basking in all her power.
In another, we're transported to her younger, teenage era when she first meets the future love of her life, not knowing what the future would have in store for her.
Netflix released the images above just a few months after GLAMOUR UK exclusively revealed the first look picture at the younger version of the scheming, easily bored, snuff-sniffing, and ultimately pro-love Queen Charlotte.
In the Netflix image, we saw actress India Amarteifio as young Queen Charlotte dressed in full regency ensemble for the limited series.
Golda Rosheuvel, who plays Queen Charlotte, the real-life wife of King George III (you know, the dude that America revolutioned against in 1776), will also feature in the show.
A new logline released via Netflix read: “Centered on Queen Charlotte's rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen's marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.”
Speaking at the Tudum event, Golda couldn't help but gush about India's acting prowess, stating: “We have this wonderful kind of tag team, where we high five each other, and the baton is passed on, which I think is a really beautiful metaphor for the older and younger… you know what I mean?”
But enough talking from us, if you're at work and just mere hours away from settling down on the sofa to watch Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story - or even eyeing it up for the impending bank holiday - we've got all the details you need below:
What is Queen Charlotte about?
I’ll tell you: It’s about Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton. “While the series will center on the rise and love life of a young Queen Charlotte, it will also tell the stories of young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury,” Netflix said in a press release upon its announcement earlier this year.
“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” added Netflix executive Bela Bajaria.
Here’s a 101 on the real Queen Charlotte: Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton are characters invented by author Julia Quinn, but Queen Charlotte was a real person! Here’s just the briefest intro to her story: She lived from 1744 to 1818 and married the heir to the English throne when she was a teenager. In the show, she doesn’t seem to have kids of her own, but in real life, she had more than ten children. The thing about knowing Mozart may have been true!
As for her race, she was definitely German, but there’s a theory that she also had African ancestry. As in the series, her husband had cognitive issues later in life, though he was quite sane at the time of the revolution. You might remember him in Hamilton singing that cheeky “I’ll go mad” line. All details courtesy of this article in The Guardian, except for the Hamilton line, which I know from Hamilton, and the King George facts, which I got from an episode of the podcast Noble Blood.
Who is making the Netflix show?
It’s another ShondaLand joint. “Shonda Rhimes will write the series and serve as executive producer alongside Betsy Beers and Tom Verica,” Netflix said.
How many episodes of Queen Charlotte are there?
There are six episodes, and they're all available to watch on Netflix right now.
Who is in the show?
The new series features some of the current cast. Even though it’s about the “younger” versions of the characters we know and love, Rosheuvel told E! News earlier this year.
Andjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury, added, “These relationships are long-lived between Lady Danbury, Lady Bridgerton, and the queen. That’s what the prequel is going to talk about. It’s Shonda Rhimes writing it, so it is going to be fabulous.”
Ruth Gemmell reprises her role as Lady Violet Bridgerton, and Hugh Sachs continues to play the older version of the queen’s attendant, Brimsley.
And there are some fresh faces! From a Netflix press release, here’s who is new to the Bridgerton universe:
India Amarteifio as Young Queen Charlotte: Betrothed to the mysterious King of England against her will, Charlotte arrives in London only to realise she was not exactly what the royals were expecting.
Michelle Fairley (CATELYN STARK WE MISSED YOU) as Princess Augusta: Determined to maintain her family’s power, the Dowager Princess does what it takes to secure her son’s place as monarch amidst a changing, modernizing Britain.
Corey Mylchreest as Young King George: Handsome, charismatic, and a bit of a mystery, George has always bowed to the restraints placed on him as the Crown.
Arsema Thomas as Young Agatha Danbury: Under the thumb of a much older husband, Agatha uses Charlotte's arrival to find her own way into society.
Also, Sam Clemmett as Young Brimsley; Richard Cunningham as Lord Bute; Tunji Kasim as Adolphus; Rob Maloney as the Royal Doctor; Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury.
When is Queen Charlotte coming out?
If you've reached this point and haven't cottoned onto the fact that Queen Charlotte is out on Netflix today (4 May), then one hasn't been paying enough attention. Tut, tut!
