Dish Offers Six Months of Free Netflix to New Customers

Dish Network signed a deal with Netflix under which new subscribers who take the satcaster’s Hopper digital video recorder will receive six months free of the subscription VOD service.

The pact isn’t as deep as Netflix would like — Dish is not offering Netflix video directly through its set-tops. Netflix has deals with several cable operators, including Suddenlink Communications and three other smaller U.S. MSOs, that are offering the SVOD service through TiVo DVRs.

But clearly, Netflix’s deals with Dish and cable operators show that a growing number of pay-TV providers see partnering with the Internet subscription-video leader as an attractive promotional tool to attract and retain subscribers.

“Offering Netflix to new Hopper subscribers is another opportunity to connect with consumers in a relevant and interesting way,” a Dish rep said.

According to Dish, the offer of free six months of Netflix will end July 31, 2014. Customers who order a qualifying TV package from the satcaster that includes the Hopper — and sign a two-year contract — will receive a promotional code six to 10 weeks after Dish service activation to redeem their free Netflix service.

Dish, which had about 14 million subscribers at the end of March, has launched other bounties to attract subscribers. Those include a free iPad to new customers who signed up for Hopper DVR service.
