The Instagrammer, who found fame as a runner-up with her boyfriend Tommy Fury on this year's Love Island, has been slammed after she posted a sultry snap of herself dressed as the Egyptian ruler on Friday night, with the caption 'Halloqween'.

She wore a costume comprising traditional clothing for Egyptian monarchy, a black wig, a gold beaded headdress and held a large Ankh (an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol) in her hand.

After Molly-Mae, who is not Egyptian, shared a photograph of herself in her Cleopatra costume, fans were quick to berate her, labelling her costume as 'cultural appropriation'. 

According to The Cambridge Dictionary, cultural appropriation is 'the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not own, without showing that you understand or respect this culture.'

One person on Instagram urged Molly-Mae: 'Please don’t use someone else’s culture as your costume. Come on, it’s 2019,' as someone else insisted: 'cultures aren’t costumes.'     

'Dressing in other folks traditional dress is not nor ever was costume. In fact it's pretty insulting,' fumed a follower, with another adding: 'Urgh cultural appropriation... sis come on.' 

'Have you ever heard of cultural appropriation? - This is it,' pointed out a fan, with someone else sarcastically commenting: 'omg YASSSSSSS cultural appropriation.' 

With an extra dose a sass, someone wrote: 'cultural appropriation: Love Island edition,' while another added: 'No sweetie no no - cultural appropriation is not on trend.'

An irate fan pointed out: 'Yes, this is cultural appropriation, you are not Egyptian and therefore have no right to use their culture for your own purposes, how very wrong of you.'   

However, in addition to the influx of fury, Molly-Mae also received many positive comments about her choice of costume.
