2023 has been the indisputable year of the bob. But just when you thought the trend had run out of steam, along comes a more voluminous take. The ‘mushroom bob’ is already igniting the desire to get a jaw-skimming crop in the New Year… it's the type of bob that tumbles nonchalantly around your face and contours your cheekbones, while also bouncing perkily beneath the ears.
Put simply, the mushroom bob should look polished and full – but simultaneously have a tousled quality. Mood boards for the look include Drew Barrymore in the early '00s and Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, with a side helping of the XXL supermodel blow-dry.
Over the past 12 months, every conceivable bob iteration – from layered bobs to the butterfly bob and the maxi bob – has livened up our social media feeds, each with a unique spin on the trend. The mushroom bob is no different and is characterised by its distinct mushroom cap shape, with curved lines and ends that tuck neatly under to create a dome-like effect (think the reverse of the flip bob).
According to celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, who counts Amal Clooney and Gigi Hadid as clients, it is typically “a blunt bob above the shoulders" and works on all hair types. "It can also look great with bangs as it will create a bowl-meets-mushroom cut,” he adds, in which case, 1920s flapper girls are your inspiration here.
The real fairytale happens when you blow-dry your hair with a round brush, as this takes it from sleek ‘90s to mushroom-like, says Dimitris, who also recently chopped Megan Fox’s long strands into a red velvet bob.
He recommends starting with mousse “to build body” – good options include Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Wave Whip Curling Mousse and Moroccanoil Volumising Mousse. To create that lift, “section the hair and blow-dry using a round brush in a smaller size than normal,” Dimitris says. “Pin each section, let the hair cool down and, at the end, brush the hair through with a paddle brush before setting in place with hairspray.” Et voila, you're ahead of the curve for the most-requested 2024 hairstyle.
